In 2017 we received one of the most special Pixar films. This soon gained a place in the hearts of viewers for its charm and also for the way in which the representation of Mexican culture was carried out through one of its best-known festivities: Day of the Death. Therefore, now that we can see it through Disney Plus, it is not a bad time to talk about some of its most interesting details, since there are quite a few.
Where to watch Coco on Disney Plus
In Coco we put ourselves under the skin of little Miguel Rivera, a young man who dreams of being a musician just like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz was. However, he comes from a family where music is frowned upon due to the family legacy. When on the Day of the Dead he decides to borrow the guitar of his favorite star to clandestinely enroll in a talent contest, it transports him to another plane in which his family’s past will come to light. Thus, we will embark for almost two hours on an adventure full of emotion and fun through the world of the dead.
Because yes, Coco focuses in death as another element of the film and the loss is present at almost every moment. However, far from opting for a negative or sad vision, Pixar decides to build an entire colorful fantasy world in which Miguel can visit those from beyond and even meet his ancestors. The stories that were left unresolved in life will now find a resolution after the appearance of the child while the entire family tries to cooperate so that he can return to the world of the living.
As I told you, this film uses the Day of the Dead and its iconography to develop itself. The Mexican culture is explored, being able to see architecture, food, clothing or even the typical language. In fact, in Spain, the right decision was made not to change the accent, leaving the original Latin dubbing as happens with other productions. The Mexican actor Gael GarcĂa Bernal is one of those in charge of providing his voice and in his case, he did it in both the English and Spanish versions.
Of course, Mexico is the central axis of the film and the city of Guanajuato was used as inspiration for the creation of the World of the Dead. In addition, Coco was released three weeks in advance in the country before its release in the United States, something that does not usually happen. Likewise, during the creation of the film, several studio workers traveled up to five times to the country to get to know its culture in depth and make a representation that is as reliable as possible.
It is true that this is not the first time that we can see different cultures represented under the Disney logo. Mulan or Pocahontas would be some examples, but it is true that it was one of the first times in which it was done within a current context and not in that of a historical representation. For this reason, Coco acquires added value such as diversity. And all things considered, that is not the only notable point, since we are talking about a beautiful work in each of its planes, fun and full of emotion.
Therefore, now that it is available through Disney Plus, it is a great opportunity to see it again. It is true that All Saints’ Day (as that day is known in Spain) has already passed, but Coco is an apt film to view at any time. What’s more, we know that in China, a country that usually censors many topics and films, the board in charge was so excited about it that they decided to make an exception and allow it. It is not surprising that with such a reception and more than 800 million dollars at the box office, she won several awards, including two Oscars.
