Tehran, Iran:
A senior general of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was killed on Monday in an Israeli attack in Syria. Tehran has vowed to make Israel “pay for this crime”. According to AFP, Iranian media also reported the death of Razi Mousavi and described him as one of the most experienced advisers of the Kurdish forces, the foreign branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The President of Iran said this
There has been no immediate comment on this matter from Israel. However, it has repeatedly said that it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi expressed condolences over Mousavi’s death, saying that Israel will definitely have to pay for this crime. “The general was killed a few hours ago during an attack by the Zionist regime in the Zinabiyah district in the suburbs of Damascus,” the official news agency IRNA reported, using a different name for Sayyida Zeinab, south of the Syrian capital.
Was the most senior general of the Kurdish forces
“Mousavi was active in the field of providing logistical support to the resistance axis in Syria,” IRNA said, referring to groups supported by Tehran and organized against Israel. The IRGC said in a statement that Mousavi was killed in a “missile attack” and vowed to avenge his death. The statement said Mousavi was an ally of Iran’s respected Kurdish commander General Qassem Suleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020. Next week Iran will mark the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s assassination, and Mousavi was the most senior Kurdish forces general killed since then.
This is how I found out
Iranian state TV said Mousavi was hit by “three missiles” and broadcast footage of smoke billowing from the area of the strike. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, reported Israeli strikes on positions in the Sayyida Zaynab area used by Iranian groups and Lebanon’s powerful Tehran-aligned Hezbollah. Residents reported hearing loud explosions and seeing plumes of smoke rising from fields in the area. Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on its northern neighbor. Mainly Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army posts have been targeted.
that’s why he’s attacking
On December 2, the IRGC accused Israel of killing two of its members in Syria. The IRGC said without giving further details that both were on an advisory mission. Israel rarely comments on reported attacks in Syria. But since the beginning of the war against Iran-backed Hamas due to the October 7 attacks by the Palestinian group, attacks there have intensified, especially against Hezbollah.
