The junta seems to want the end of the Algiers agreement which governed peace between independence movements and the central power.
The images began to appear on social networks in the spring. Since then, they have invaded them, showing intense fighting between the Malian army (Fama) and former allies, notably the Coalition of Azawad Movements (CMA). On September 17, CMA men attacked and pillaged the Léré base, in the Timbuktu region, occupied several days before a withdrawal. On September 12, a similar raid tore Bourem apart while in August, clashes shook Ber. In total, the death toll amounts to dozens of deaths, signaling the return of war to northern Mali; the situation that prevailed eleven years ago. The Algiers agreements, which in 2015 put an end to hostilities between certain Tuareg movements and Bamako, are certainly not officially obsolete.
“I consider the agreement dead. But, as the actors are the same, we can very well have a few months of fighting then a return to discussions. But I am quite pessimistic”underlines…
