Palestinian terrorist group Hamas gave tranquilizer pills to hostages before handing them over to Israelto hide the mistreatment they suffered during the more than 50 days they were kidnapped, according to an Israeli ministerial report.
Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the medical division of Israel’s Health Ministry, informed the Israeli government about the suspected drugs on Tuesday, according to The Times of Israel.
Mizrahi named the drug clonazepam, known outside Israel as Klonopin and Rivotril, like the one that was supposedly supplied, according to the aforementioned media.
Clonazepam would have made the hostages appear calm, happy and optimistic after living through a nightmare of physical abuse, deprivation and psychological terror at the hands of Hamas, according to the report. The substance is used to relieve panic attacks, among other purposes.noted the National Institutes of Health.
The hostages, who were kidnapped in Gaza on October 7 by Hamas terrorists who invaded the border, were first handed over to the International Red Cross before being transferred to Israel, the Israeli government said.
The handover of the hostages occurred in the midst of the temporary ceasefire agreement that came into force on November 24, during which Hamas released 110 hostages in exchange for some 240 Palestinian prisoners. However, the truce was short-lived and fighting resumed last Friday after both sides failed to reach an agreement to achieve a permanent ceasefire.
Since the start of fighting between the Jewish State and the Islamist group on October 7, nearly 16,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis have died.
