The organizers said that the response received so far from those who have heard about the program has been surprising. ‘Many educational institutions have inquired whether they would be able to give a lecture by Luke Jerram. Luke Jerum will be speaking at Thiruvananthapuram CET, International School and Priyadarshini Planetarium in the coming days. The response from the American Consulate is very gratifying. U.S. Consul General Christopher Hodges has informed that he will reach Thiruvananthapuram from Chennai tomorrow night to see the ‘Museum of Moon’. The installation will be on display at Kanakakunnu for a single night as a prelude to the Global Science Festival Kerala starting in January. The exhibition is free,’ say the organizers.
The Museum of the Moon has been created by Luke Jerome by combining the original images taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter camera. By combining them, a 23-meter wide high-resolution image was prepared at the Astronomy Science Center in the United States. In 2016, after twenty years of efforts, Luc Jerum organized the first exhibition. It was then invited to different parts of the world and exhibited in more than a hundred places.
For each centimeter of this lunar sphere, five kilometers of lunar surface are visible. Humans can only see one side of the moon from Earth. If you look at the moon, which is only seen as a flat plate, through a telescope, you will not get the experience of seeing it as a sphere, except that you will see it a little closer and bigger. The Museum of the Moon provides an opportunity to see the moon up close and personal, including the other side of the moon, which has never been seen.
This seven-meter diameter lunar sphere will be installed at the height of a three-story building. As the light similar to moonlight illuminates the surface from within, you get the feeling of having a shining moon in front of your eyes. The screening will also feature music composed by BAFT award-winning composer Dan Jones.
