Yemeni government accuses Houthis of involving children in fighting in Marib

The Yemeni government has accused the Ansarullah (Houthis) movement, which controls much of the west of the country, of actively involving children and adolescents in the fighting in Marib province.

According to the authorities, the number of children and adolescents in the ranks of the rebels has doubled in recent years.

Yemeni Minister of Information Muammer al-Iryani told the SABA news agency that the Houthis are not abandoning their attempts to seize the oil and gas-rich province of Marib.

A large number of Houthis have been killed in the war zone in recent months, forcing the Ansarullah command to fill the gap with children and adolescents, he said. “It is against international law to involve children in hostilities. The UN and human rights structures must intervene in the situation and stop the “genocide of children”. Those responsible must be punished, ”al-Iryani said.

The province of Marib is considered one of the strongholds of the government forces of Yemen. The General Staff is also located here. Rebels resumed active offensive operations in Marib from February 2021.
