Xuan Son’s injury was more severe than initially diagnosed

Returning with the Vietnamese team on the afternoon of January 6, Xuan Son was taken to Vinmec Sports Medicine Center – a prestigious address that has treated injuries for many Vietnamese players.

After conducting in-depth examinations and consulting with experts, Vinmec determined that Xuan Son’s injuries were more serious than initially recorded.

The consultation results recorded: Xuan Son suffered a complex closed fracture of the middle 1/3 of the body of the two lower leg bones, with a large fragment. Doctors at Vinmec Sports Medicine Center decided on a closed bone fusion surgery method using intramedullary nails with pins under a light-enhancing screen.

This is a minimally invasive surgical solution that minimizes soft tissue damage and ensures quick recovery. The surgery started at 8:18 p.m. and was completed at 9:43 p.m. The doctor who performed the surgery was Professor Tran Trung Dung, director of the Orthopedics & Musculoskeletal Trauma Department of the Vinmec medical system.

Doctors provide a lot of important information

The doctor shared: “We just finished the surgery for Xuan Son. Basically, this is a pretty serious injury: two very large broken pieces, one 3 cm, one 7 cm. We want to help. She recovers the fastest. Regarding bone injuries, we perform intramedullary nailing without opening the fracture. Basically, it preserves the anatomy, does not dislodge the broken pieces, and does not require opening So the surgery took longer longer than normal, about 1 and a half hours. The surgery was checked by ultrasound and CT, ensuring the requirements of surgery, correction and fixation. Up to now, the surgery has been successful good.

After surgery, the patient will wake up and will be taken back to the room and immediately receive treatment methods. Includes: cold therapy, local massage movement. Tomorrow, January 7, patients can practice moving with crutches or wheelchairs. Then, go to the Vinmec Sports Medicine and Trauma area to practice with specialized equipment.”

Ms. Marcele Seippel, Xuan Son’s wife, shared before her husband went on the operating table: “Of course I am very worried, but I understand that in sports, injuries are unavoidable. The most important thing is that I completely trust Vinmec’s doctors. They took care of my family, and our son was born here too!”

Xuan Son will be transferred to the intensive care area to monitor and evaluate his condition. It is likely that Xuan Son will take about 3 months before he can return to light exercise. And it may take a few more months for him to return to the field.
