Xuan Son is really unlucky
In the final second leg, Xuan Son played excellently but unfortunately suffered a serious injury and was forced to leave the field. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with fractures of both bones in his right shin, requiring long-term treatment and recovery. His wife was also present at the hospital to encourage and take care of her husband during this difficult period. According to a doctor, Xuan Son needs 3 months to recover from two broken bones and cannot compete in the Asian Cup with the Vietnamese team.

The Vietnam Football Federation and Nam Dinh Club – Xuan Son’s parent team – are actively discussing to find the most optimal surgery option for him. Options being considered include performing surgery abroad or bringing him back for treatment in Vietnam. The important goal is to ensure an effective recovery process, helping Xuan Son soon return to the field with peak performance in the future.
Nam Dinh team manager Nguyen Van Thien had a phone conversation with Son. “Don’t worry, we will get the best treatment.” He directed the club: “By all means, use the best treatment conditions to treat Son, so that you can soon return to contribute to the Vietnamese team.”
Xuan Son still expressed his joy when the Vietnamese team won 3-2, winning the championship. According to the image shared from Xuan Son’s hospital room, he smiled brightly and watched his teammates celebrate their victory through the phone screen.
Notably, Xuan Son also received two individual titles: “Top scorer” and “Best player of the tournament”. His teammates showed solidarity and honored him by holding Xuan Son’s jersey when receiving the award.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the coaching staff are coordinating with medical experts to determine the best treatment plan for Xuan Son, to ensure he has optimal recovery conditions.
Nguyen Xuan Son, born on March 30, 1997 in Brazil with the birth name Rafaelson Bezerra Fernandes. He started his professional football career at Vitória Club in Brazil, then played in Japan and Denmark before coming to Vietnam to play football. In Vietnam, he played for clubs Nam Dinh, SHB Da Nang and Binh Dinh, before returning to Nam Dinh in 2023.
In September 2024, he officially became a Vietnamese citizen with the name Nguyen Xuan Son and was quickly called up to the Vietnamese national team. Although he only started playing in the match against Myanmar in the group stage, Xuan Son quickly caused a stir throughout Southeast Asia with his brilliant performance, continuously scoring goals and providing assists.
Xuan Son’s injury is a big loss for the team, but with a resilient fighting spirit and support from his family, teammates and the Vietnam Football Federation, fans believe he will soon recover and Return to the field and continue to contribute to Vietnamese football.

According to the 2027 Asian Cup schedule, the Vietnamese team will meet Laos on March 25, 2025. Vietnam also hosts Nepal (October 9, 2025) and Malaysia (March 31, 2026) in the remaining 2 matches at home. Vietnam also plays away matches against Malaysia (June 10), Nepal (October 14), and Laos (November 18).
