The mother of the owner of a fast food restaurant in Utah attacked a Hispanic woman for speaking in Spanish on his phone, but the victim posted a video on social media, which went viral.
The video on TikTok and other platforms reached several thousand views, in which the woman is heard telling the Hispanic woman: “We don’t speak Spanish here“.
When the victim questions this statement, the aggressor asks her to leave the premises, supported by another woman: “Go away,” she told her.
The video was taken up by TikToker Carlos Eduardo Espina, who has millions of followers and criticized the attitude of the aggressor, in addition to asking followers to help him find her.
Univision confirmed that the incident occurred at a store in downtown South Lake, Utah, where the owner was interviewed, who said that the aggressor was his mother.
Adriana Vega, the victim, acknowledged that she had never faced an attack of that type.
“I had never been through a situation like this. I felt very sad and I felt sadder that there are people who do not speak English and do not know how to defend themselves,” he said. “I think that many people identify with my story.”
Vega says she was speaking in Spanish with her mother on the phone when the store employee attacked her.
The restaurant has received negative comments and had to block the Yelp app due to the number of messages.
Josh Roman, owner of Robin’s Nest restaurant, said his mother was Italian and she just doesn’t like to stay silent.
According to her version, the woman told Vega that “it was her turn” and to hang up the phone, but in the recording it is clearly heard when the aggressor says that “Spanish is not spoken there.”
Roman acknowledges that since the day of the attack he has received negative messages by phone, email and messages on digital platforms, but he affirms that his restaurant does not discriminate against Hispanics.
“There are people outside my restaurant watching me,” he said.
However, the Univision report does not reveal whether those people were there.
