- Will Aam Aadmi Party be able to take root in Uttarakhand like Delhi?
- AAP trying to be an alternative to BJP and Congress
- The attitude of ex-servicemen will play an important role in Uttarakhand elections
Assembly elections are due in Uttarakhand early next year. Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party has also announced that this time it will contest the assembly elections on all 70 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party has also declared its chief ministerial candidate. Also, Delhi CM and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has gone to Uttarakhand and promised that if he comes to power, 300 units of electricity will be given free of cost. Will Aam Aadmi Party be able to show something amazing in Uttarakhand? If the Aam Aadmi Party grows in Uttarakhand, at what cost will it move forward?
Trying to be an alternative to BJP and Congress
Till now Congress and BJP have been the only two main parties in the politics of Uttarakhand. Although BSP and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal have also had MLAs, the main contest was always between the Congress and the BJP. BJP is in power now. In Uttarakhand politics, power has been changing in every election. From time to time, it has also been raised in social circles that Uttarakhand needs an alternative. Apart from Congress and BJP, Uttarakhand also needs a strong party. But will the Aam Aadmi Party be able to become that alternative? The Aam Aadmi Party had shown the wonder in Delhi and the kind of support the Aam Aadmi Party got in Delhi, it could not get it in other states. Except Punjab, in whichever state the Aam Aadmi Party contested the assembly elections, it could not even register its strong presence. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party became the main opposition party in its very first assembly election. But there is also a difference in the situation of Uttarakhand and Punjab. Before the Aam Aadmi Party contested the Punjab assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party had got four of its MPs from Punjab itself. The circumstances are different in Uttarakhand but the Aam Aadmi Party is constantly trying to establish its roots in Uttarakhand.
The identity of Delhi will be shown to the people
If Aam Aadmi Party moves ahead in Uttarakhand, then both BJP and Congress will suffer. With this, the hope of the lone regional party going ahead will also be bleak. Uttarakhand Kranti Dal is the political party that was the leader of the separate Uttarakhand state movement. If the Aam Aadmi Party moves forward, then the hope of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal rising again will be dimmed. Uttarakhand is a state where almost every family has someone in Delhi. Either in studies or in job or business. Therefore, the identity of the Aam Aadmi Party and its Delhi is clear to the people of Uttarakhand. Aam Aadmi Party is also making similar promises in Uttarakhand as they have done in Delhi. Like 200 units of electricity is free in Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party has promised 300 units of free electricity in Uttarakhand. BJP will face anti-incumbency wave in Uttarakhand. In an attempt to avoid this, the BJP has made three CMs in five years, but still, if the Aam Aadmi Party moves forward, it will harm the BJP.
To whom will the ex-servicemen go?
Uttarakhand is a military dominated state. There are ex-servicemen in every village, every locality. Aam Aadmi Party has made retired Colonel Ajay Kothiyal from the Indian Army as its CM candidate. Ex-servicemen are considered supporters of BJP. BJP has also been asking for votes in the name of surgical strike and sometimes Balakot air strike. BJP has also benefited on the issue of nationalism. But the CM candidate of Aam Aadmi Party is a retired officer from the Indian Army. BJP may have to suffer if ex-servicemen go towards them. Those who are angry with BJP can also go towards Aam Aadmi Party. It is also believed that if a BJP-Congress leader does not get a ticket, then he can also join the Aam Aadmi Party, even if it is for a ticket. In a way, where it seems that the growth of Aam Aadmi Party can harm BJP, while the growth of Aam Aadmi Party can be harmful for Congress too. In Uttarakhand, the Congress is hoping that it will benefit from the people’s displeasure over the BJP. Congress is also trying to capitalize on it. But if the Aam Aadmi Party creates an atmosphere in its favor and a message goes among the people that Aam Aadmi Party can do well in the elections, then people angry with BJP can also support Aam Aadmi Party instead of Congress. In such a situation, the hope of Congress may get a setback. But all this will happen only when the Aam Aadmi Party is seen as an alternative in Uttarakhand.
How much importance the voters of Uttarakhand give to the Aam Aadmi Party, it will be known only at the time of the elections, but it is clear that the more the Aam Aadmi Party progresses, the Congress will suffer and the BJP will also suffer. If we look at the politics of Delhi itself, with the growth of the Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress had to suffer a lot. Where the contest was between the BJP and the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party pushed the BJP back and the Congress was completely wiped out. Like Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party is trying to establish its roots in Uttarakhand too. How much influence she can make in her first election in Uttarakhand will also tell whether the path of the party’s future in the state will be easy or difficult.
