Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on January 3 announced an asset declaration according to regulations of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). AFP cited records published by the media showing that Ms. Paetongtarn owns assets worth 13.8 billion baht (10,195 billion VND, about 400 million USD). Of which, Ms. Paetongtarn’s investments are worth 11 billion baht and billions of other baht are savings and cash.
The female prime minister owns 75 luxury watches worth 162 million baht and 39 other watches. In addition, she has 217 designer bags worth 76 million baht, along with many real estate properties in London (UK) and Japan.
In addition, Ms. Paetongtarn declared that she owes nearly 5 billion baht, so her current net worth is 8.9 billion baht. A representative of the ruling Pheu Thai party confirmed the above figures were accurate.
Ms. Paetongtarn is the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She took office in August 2024. Mr. Thaksin was a famous businessman in the telecommunications industry before becoming prime minister. He once bought the English football club Manchester City and has a net worth of 2.1 billion USD, making him the 10th richest person in Thailand, according to Forbes.
After being overthrown in the 2006 political upheaval, Mr. Thaksin lived in exile abroad but is said to still maintain great influence. He returned to Thailand in 2023 and was imprisoned on multiple charges but was pardoned.
His sister Yingluck Shinawatra also served as Prime Minister of Thailand and was also overthrown in 2014. She lives in exile and has not returned to the country until now.
