The Water Metro team will soon conduct a detailed study involving the Nat Pak team. Plans are underway to implement the project on Kollam – Mun Rothuruth, Kollam – Chavara – Azhikal – Alappuzha, Kollam Paravoor – Varkala routes. After briefing the Corporation about the project and holding a discussion with the Mayor, the team visited Ashtamudi Kayal.
Preliminary discussions to bring water metro to Kollam have started. The project is environmentally friendly with an aim to strengthen the tourism sector and inland waterways of the district. A meeting was held between Mayor Prasanna Ernst and the Water Transport Department, including the functioning of the Kochi Water Metro.
The implementation of the project will include areas surrounded by water. The water metro project will help in expansion of traffic in Ashtamudi backwater in Kollam. In the first phase run water metro service to Munrothuruth as well. Later the project will extend to Paravur and Chavara.
Necessary studies for construction of terminals and boat yards along with water metro will be carried out. Along with this, the possibility of surveillance camera and automatic fare control systems will be utilized with the help of modern technology. A preliminary assessment is that the water body is suitable for starting a water metro. A depth of 2.5 meters is sufficient for water metro. Authorities say that Ashtamudikayal has sufficient depth.
