The American embassy in Damascus condemned on Wednesday the “ brutal ” attack perpetrated by the Syrian regime against the governorate of Daraa in southern Syria.
The embassy said in a tweet: “We condemn the brutal attack by the al-Assad regime on Daraa, where civilians have been killed and thousands more displaced. These intensified attacks have also caused a shortage of food and of drugs “.
“The United States calls for an immediate ceasefire and unhindered access to the United Nations and humanitarian actors,” added the same source.
Earlier on Wednesday, the negotiating committee of the “Daraa Al-Balad” zone in the southern Syrian province of Daraa reached an agreement with Russia for a ceasefire, after intensive bombardment of the region in recent years. days, and attempts to storm the area by regime forces.
On June 25, Syrian regime forces and their affiliated militias besieged the “Deraa Al-Balad” area in the city of Daraa, after the opposition refused to hand over small arms, violating the deal negotiated by Russia. in 2018, which stipulated the handing over of heavy and medium weapons.
A month later, Deraa Al-Balad’s negotiating committee and regime forces reached an agreement demanding a partial withdrawal of the remaining small arms in opposition hands with a partial presence of regime forces, but the latter violated the agreement and insisted on taking full control of the area.
