New Delhi: Vinesh Phogat, who got a direct entry to the Asian Games, has announced that she will not be able to participate in the continental games to be held in Hangzhou, China due to a knee injury. The exclusion of Vinesh and Bajrang Punia from the Asian Games trials had created a controversy and the decision of the adhoc panel was strongly criticized by the wrestling fraternity.
Vinesh revealed her injury on X (formerly Twitter). He said, ‘I want to share a very bad news. Two days back on 13th August 2023 I injured my left knee during practice. After scans and tests the doctors said that unfortunately the only treatment for this injury is an operation.
Vinesh said, ‘I will have an operation on August 17 in Mumbai. It was my dream to win the gold medal that I won for India at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 but unfortunately due to this injury, I will not be able to participate in these games anymore.

He also said that he has informed the concerned authorities so that the reserve players can be sent for the Asian Games. This clears the way for the last Panghal to join the team. He had won the trials and was kept as a standby.
