In the show of 5 Indonesian designers at New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2025Nguyen Hung Phuc was invited to the position of catwalk director. This is the 5th time he has attended a major fashion event but the first time he has taken on such an important role.
He is responsible for sound and lighting arrangements, and coordinating guest seating arrangements. In addition, he also works directly with model management companies to guide the performance and catwalk routes. Nguyen Hung Phuc said he has to work with each foreign designer, stylist, photographer, and cameraman to ensure the show is neat.
The director said he still adhered to the standards of New York Fashion Week with a minimalist catwalk and catwalk. However, instead of going one way in a U shape as usual, he cut the stage into two lines. “The new catwalk line helps the models stay on the catwalk longer, the audience can see each design more clearly and carefully, and at the same time, there is more time for the remaining models to change clothes,” said Nguyen Hung Phuc.
To have a 20-25 minute show, the young director and his crew went to New York four days in advance to instruct the models, try on costumes, etc. He encountered many difficulties in this role because: “When I went abroad, I was almost unknown. The model management companies did not know who I was, so it was difficult for them to trust and follow my instructions. At first, there were arguments between the two sides. I am grateful to the Indonesian designer for trusting and fighting for me to have full authority to make decisions and show my full potential.”
During the catwalk staging process, Nguyen Hung Phuc said he always had the utmost respect for the 40 international models. “I always did the smallest things myself, such as adjusting each dress, each lamp, each chair. When incidents occurred, I was always there to support them and make appropriate adjustments. Through many actions like that, gradually the partners also changed their previous thoughts about a stranger from Vietnam. I realized that when doing everything with passion, it will be recognized,” he shared.
After this business trip, Nguyen Hung Phuc was impressed with the professionalism of the international models and the strictness of every detail at the New York Fashion WeekHe also enjoys the collections of Indonesian designers because they are highly practical but still imbued with cultural identity. “I hope to have the opportunity to see similar modern and traditional Vietnamese collections on the catwalk in New York,” he said.
