The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, seeks to extend the French nuclear umbrella to its EU partners to reinforce the strategic autonomy of the block. This week, within the framework of the Paris Defense and Strategy Forum, Macron assured against NATO military chiefs that it is time to “collectively assume responsibility”, since “this is the time when Europe must assert all its weight, by Ukraine and by itself”. While the United Kingdom and the United States have committed their nuclear abilities to defend other NATO countries in case of attack, France maintains a position of independence, managing its nuclear arsenal autonomously.
