Eduardo Iturralde González examines one of the refereeing decisions that caused the most talk at Euro 2020: the penalty that was not awarded in the England-Denmark game. “They had always said that they had a lot of fair play, but the player let himself fall,” says Iturralde. However, he also adds that, had he been on the field of refereeing, he would have also called that penalty. “There is another ball next to the corner on the field, but with two balls you can play; they wanted to make the conspiracy theory big,” insists the referee.
This is the fifth installment of the nine-part series of Itu’s VARin which the referee examines controversial refereeing decisions in different matchdays of all editions of the Euro Cup, such as the false penalty in the Spain-England match at the 1996 Euro Cup or the permissiveness of the 1976 Euro Cup.
