Vuhledar, a small town in eastern Ukraine, has great symbolism. Its conquest reflects Russia’s strategy in taking Ukrainian territories, as well as the high price in human lives that this implies for the local population and the numerous soldiers on the front: at the worst moment of the battle, Russia lost 300 soldiers at the day. In this video, Gonzalo Vallejo, analyst of the Armies Magazine and Kateryna Stepanenko of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) explain how, despite Russia’s heavy losses in troops and Ukraine’s difficulties due to a shortage of military personnel and equipment, both countries continue to fighting for every square kilometer of sovereignty before signing any peace agreement that ends the war.
