Kévin Vauquelin (Arkea), 23, won the second stage of the Tour de France on Sunday. It is the second French victory in the two days of the race so far. Vauquelin won after being part of the breakaway and being the strongest of the escapees. In addition, Pogacar has placed himself with the jersey yellow. The Slovenian cyclist, who this season won the Giro d’Italia after placing first overall also in the second stage, has taken the lead from Romain Bardet.
Vingegaard, the reigning Tour champion, has shown that he is back on his feet after his injury. The Dane responded well to an attack by Pogacar just a few kilometres from the finish line, and rode with him, without losing a single second today. Carapaz and Evenepoel did the same.
A Tour de France debutant this year, Vauquelin was runner-up in the French time trial. Today he has claimed his second French victory after Bardet’s on the first day. It is the most brilliant victory in the record of this young cyclist, who is competing in his second Grand Tour, after the one in Spain last year and who until now had stood out as a good rider in the fight against the clock.
The Arkea rider was the most astute of the ten-rider breakaway, which also included his compatriots Quentin Pacher (Groupama), Axel Laurance (Alpecin), Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies), Canadian Hugo Houle (Israel), Portuguese Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), Norwegian Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X), Colombian Harold Tejada (Astana), Spaniard Cristian Rodriguez and Dutchman Mike Teunissen (Intermarché).
