How did it start?
- The process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code had started in 2022, when the Chief Minister made it an election promise.
- A committee of experts was formed, including former judges, sociologists and legal experts.
- The committee prepared a report after extensive consultation, which has now been implemented in the form of rules.
Key points of implementing UCC:
- The rules related to marriage, divorce and succession will be the same for citizens of all religions.
- The state government has also launched a digital portal to implement UCC, providing citizens access to information and services.
- The move is aimed at promoting communal harmony and confidence in the law in the state.
national importance
This step of Uttarakhand can become an example for other states of the country and the central government also. This may spark a debate on whether the time has come to implement a Uniform Civil Code across the country or not.
