After the death of Balwinder Singh, a farmer in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, a case has been registered against his mother and brother for insulting the national flag after their bodies were covered with a tricolor. This information has been given in a report of English newspaper The Indian Express.
Balwinder Singh (32) was killed on 24 January in an accident near Ghazipur in Delhi, where he was participating in the farmer movement. He had left home the previous day.
On this matter, Pilibhit’s SP Jai Prakash told that after a complaint from the police station incharge, an FIR was registered at Sehramau North Police Station on Wednesday. He said, “Two people are named in the FIR, as well as unknown people have also been accused. Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971 has been imposed against the accused.
Ashramosh Raghuvanshi, SHO of Sehramau North, said that Singh died on January 24 after being hit by a truck about 2 km from the protest site. He said, “Somebody covered his body with the national flag, which is not allowed. The body was taken to the crematorium along with the flag. When we came to know about this, we registered a case on 3 February.
The Indian Express has said that a case has been registered against Singh’s mother Jasveer Kaur (51) and brother Gurvinder Singh (22) under this act.
When asked if Singh’s brother or mother had covered the body with the tricolor, SHO Raghuvanshi said, “Either the family kept it there or they should tell us who did it. We have given this to unknown people Is also placed in the FIR. This will be part of the investigation. “
According to the news agency IANS, in the meantime many religious and peasant representatives have given their support to the concerned family. A local Sikh leader said, “I condemn the action taken by the police and demand the UP government to ask the Pilibhit police to withdraw the FIR. If the tricolor is draped over the body of the opposing farmer, So it is a symbol of patriotism of the farmers, not an insult to the national flag. “
