US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad is leaving his post, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.
According to Blinken, Khalilzad will be replaced by his deputy Thomas West.
“I express my gratitude to Khalilzad for decades of service to the American people,” he said.
Blinken clarified that West was on the national security team during Joe Biden’s vice presidency.
West will spearhead Washington’s diplomatic efforts on Afghanistan and will make recommendations to the secretary and deputy secretary of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, the diplomat added.
Zalmay Khalilzad was appointed Special Envoy for Afghanistan by former US President Donald Trump and was instrumental in US negotiations with the Taliban.
