The US Embassy in Tripoli announced on Tuesday that US Ambassador and Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland will travel to the Egyptian capital Cairo on August 10 and 11 to meet with retired General Khalifa Haftar and Egyptian officials.
The embassy said in a series of tweets that Norland will be “in Cairo on August 10 and 11” to meet with Egyptian officials and retired General Khalifa Haftar.
And the same source explains that this meeting is “part of the American efforts to support the Libyan legislative and presidential elections scheduled for next December”. Following the example of recent contacts made with key Libyan personalities, Ambassador Norland insists on the urgency of supporting all compromises to agree on a constitutional basis and a legal framework necessary for the organization of the elections. A way out of the crisis has been looming in Libya since the government of national unity and the new Presidential Council took office on March 16, 2021, to lead the country to the legislative and presidential elections scheduled for December 24.
Although Haftar’s militia hailed the election of the interim authority, General Khalifa Haftar continues to operate independently of the legitimate government and heads an armed militia, calling himself “Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Army”, disregarding the Supreme Army Commander and President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Manfi.
