UN grateful to Turkey for close partnership on refugee issue

The UN is grateful to Turkey for its close cooperation in resolving the problems of Syrian refugees and providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. This was stated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, commenting on the results of the negotiations with the Turkish leadership in Ankara on Twitter.

“Today I was received by the President (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) to discuss decisions on Syrian refugees in Turkey and the region, as well as the need to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. UNHCR is grateful for Turkey’s strong partnership in both endeavors, ”wrote Grandi.

According to the High Commissioner, during his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, the topic of forced migration in the region was discussed. The UN representative noted that the negotiations were held in a positive manner.

Grandi stressed that in the face of the refugee crisis in Syria and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, it is necessary to strengthen the response and accelerate the search for solutions.

The head of the UNHCR also spoke about the meeting with Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu. “We discussed how to solve Turkey’s growing migration problems as it continues to host large numbers of Syrian, Afghan and other refugees. Additional international assistance required! ”- wrote Filippo Grandi.
