STORY – Despite the mobilization of many volunteers, emergency reception remains problematic.
Mud-covered quilts thrown on the floor, volunteers with food and drink, and silent Ukrainian refugees. That morning, at Brussels Expo, north of the Belgian capital, several hundred lined up in front of the only registration center in the country. They came to obtain temporary protection allowing access to housing, work or social minima, access to healthcare, etc.
Belgium recordedbetween 25,000 and 30,000Ukrainian refugees, says Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. And 200,000 could join the country. “It’s an effort that will last“says the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Sammy Mahdi. After a chaotic start, the reception is improving. Since Tuesday, Ukrainians can make an appointment on the internet. There are now 66 counters to process requests at Brussels Expo and around forty interpreters.
