UEFA announced this Monday several changes in women’s football. The most significant is the increase in prizes for the teams in the next Euro Cup in Switzerland, in which the composition of the groups for its edition next summer was also known. The European Committee will give 41 million more in prizes for Euro2025, which represents an increase of 156% compared to what was won in the last one in 2022 in England. The other two changes are the announcement of the name of a new competition for next year, the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup for clubs – created a year ago -, the change in the format of the Champions League and the financial distribution system for the next five years. in women’s club competitions.
The increase in prizes in the Euro Cup will reach the players, since, for the first time, the national federations participating will distribute a guaranteed percentage of the prizes (between 30% and 40%) for the footballers. In addition, the money that the clubs will receive will also be increased. Benefit payments to clubs will increase to six million euros, making it the highest club benefit program in women’s football. Relatedly, a new revenue distribution system has been approved for UEFA women’s club competitions starting next season. The centralization of media rights and sponsorship rights for the League Phase of the Champions League will improve the visibility of the competition and attract more revenue, ensuring more revenue for participating clubs based on their performance.
UEFA has reported on the creation of a new European club competition that will begin next season. This will be a two-match elimination format and the Champions League will change from the Group Phase to the League Phase, as in the men’s discipline, made up of 18 clubs. For the first two seasons, an availability of 37.7 million euros per season is expected, while for the last three, an availability of 46.7 million euros per season, according to UEFA.
