“On the morning of January 18, a gunman infiltrated the Supreme Court to carry out the assassination of two brave and experienced judges. The two judges were martyred,” AFP quoted information posted on the Mizan Online website. of the Iranian judiciary.
According to Mizan, the gunman committed suicide after committing a terrorist act.
State news agency IRNA said another person was injured.
Mizan identified the two murdered Supreme Court judges as Mr. Ali Razini (71 years old) and Mr. Mohammad Moghisseh (68 years old). Both are handling cases related to national security, espionage and terrorism.
Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir reported on national television that “a gunman holding a handgun entered the offices of two judges and shot them”.
The investigation is ongoing, and the motive for the assassination is unknown.
However, Mizan said the attacker was not involved in any cases being handled by the Supreme Court, and did not provide further details on the gunman’s identity.
President Masoud Pezeshkian directed authorities to act quickly and find those involved.
Judge Moghisseh was placed on the sanctions list by the US Treasury Department in 2019 for allegedly taking on baseless trials and ignoring much evidence during trial.
Judge Razini over the years has held a number of important positions in the Iranian judiciary. In 1998, he almost died after attackers planted a bomb in the judge’s car, but luckily the bomb was detected.
