Turkish diplomat elected as Secretary General of TURKPA

Turkish diplomat Mehmet Sureya Er has been appointed the new Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries (TURKPA).

Mehmet Sureya Er, a former Turkish ambassador to Tashkent, was appointed to this post on the recommendation of the speaker of the Turkish parliament, Mustafa Shentop. He will serve as Secretary General of TurkPa for four years.

In an interview with “Anadolu” agency, Mustafa Shentop said that member states elect a Secretary General every four years by rotating in English alphabetical order.

“Before that, there were persons proposed by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Now it’s Turkey’s turn, ”the speaker explained.

Shentop noted that Turkey strives to make the activities of TurkPa more active and effective. According to him, the appointment of a person with a diplomatic background to the post of secretary general will contribute to this.

He also pointed out that Er has worked as Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) for about eight years, in charge of TIKA’s activities in the Central Asian region.
