Turkey: firefighting plane crashes in operation in Kahramanmaraş

A firefighting plane crashed on Saturday while extinguishing a forest fire in Kahramanmaraş state in southern Turkey.

The Anadolu Agency correspondent claimed, citing official local sources, that contact with the plane leased from Russia by the Turkish Forest Directorate was cut while it was putting out fires in Kahramanmaraş province.

He said search and rescue teams moved to the area where the plane crashed.

In a statement to the Anadolu Agency, the mayor of Kahramanmaraş, Omar Farouk Coşkun, indicated that a fire had broken out during the day following a lightning, at a site in the “February 12” district of the province.

“We sent a plane into the area, but the contact was cut before it crashed. We then dispatched a large number of teams to the region, ”he concluded, stressing that the work of extinguishing the fire by air and land continues.
