The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the attempted coup d’etat in Guinea and the arrest of the country’s president, Alfa Conde.
Ankara is following the latest developments in the West African country with “deep concern”, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
“Turkey opposes any attempts to illegally change the elected government,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.
The Foreign Ministry expressed hope for the early restoration of constitutional order in Guinea and the immediate release of President Condé.
“Turkey supports friendly and fraternal Guinea in this difficult and sensitive period,” the ministry added.
Earlier, the military in Guinea, who reportedly arrested 83-year-old President Alpha Conde, issued a statement of the military coup on state-run RTG.
The head of Guinea’s special forces (GFS), Colonel Mamadi Dumbuya, announced the suspension of the constitution, the dissolution of the government and state institutions, and the intention to prepare a draft new constitution with the participation of the country’s citizens in the near future.
According to Dumbuyi, the military has decided to close the air and land borders. He added that work will soon begin to form a transitional government.
