Togo ready to welcome Turkish President Erdogan

AA / Lomé

Togo is ready to welcome Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Posters, portraits of Erdogan and Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, as well as Turkish flags can be seen in the streets of Lomé. The capital of Togo will welcome Erdogan and his delegation on Tuesday as part of an official visit.

Some Togolese citizens, a few hours before the arrival of the Turkish delegation, are showing optimism about the future of relations between Turkey and their country.

Cherafdine Tchadjobo, 27, told Agence Anadolu that Turkey is asserting itself more and more in Togo.

“I know that Turkey has opened an embassy in Lomé. I am sure that the official visit of the Turkish President will improve relations considerably and bring the two countries closer together,” he said.

Monique Adade, 24, an industrial engineer, said that relations between the two countries have improved and that a partner like Turkey represents an asset for her country.

“I was informed of the visit of the Turkish President through the posters. I am sure that this visit will be a forerunner of important opportunities for both countries,” she said.

Togo will be the second stop on President Erdogan’s four-day African tour that began in Angola on Monday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made the first Turkish official visit to Togo on July 20, 2020. This was followed by the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Lomé on April 1, 2021.
