  • Akshar Patel is playing the 5th Test match of his career.
  • Bowling all-rounder Akshar has taken a total of 35 wickets.
  • Akshar made his Test debut against England this year

It was always Axar Patel’s dream to deliver the best he could during hours of hard work for many years and he is now happy to do so on the big stage of cricket against teams like New Zealand after England.

Akshar remained under the shadow of another left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja for most of the years before making his 2021 debut but has now picked up 36 wickets in his fifth Test. Asked how he would see this year starting with 27 wickets in three Tests against England, he said it was definitely a dream.

Akshar said, ‘It has actually been a dream year for me, you may say so. The way I bowled in the England series and the way the series against New Zealand is going now and with the IPL in between, I can say it has been a very good year for me personally.

Akshar scored 52 and 41 not out in the second Test against New Zealand. After the end of the third day’s play, he said, ‘My effort is to continuously improve and see in which areas I need to improve. The hard work done over the years has finally paid off this year.

Rather, his two crucial knocks in this current Test have given him confidence that the trio of him, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja can play as a full-fledged all-rounder in home conditions.

“The batting coach (Vikram Rathod) and the team management have faith in my batting ability and they have always told me ‘you can do it’. Earlier, when I got a chance, I could not take the start to a good score but this time I did it.

“My batting is benefitting the team and if you see me, Jaddu and Aish bhai playing as all-rounders, it will take some pressure off our batsmen, so that’s a good sign,” said Akshar. If I continue to contribute, it is good for me and my team. But he knows that he may have to sit out for the South Africa series.

“The team management discusses with us and tells us whether we fit into the team combination or not. Whatever is the priority for the team, it gets done. We tell ourselves that we should focus on our everyday practice and how we can improve.’
