The US government budget will expire at the end of December 20 (US time). If lawmakers cannot extend it, the government will begin a partial shutdown from December 21, risking disruption to many activities, especially during the Christmas rush.
Mr. Trump supports it, the House of Representatives rejects the budget, and the US government is at risk of shutdown
The new bill proposed by the Republicans wants to extend the government budget until March 2025, when Mr. Trump returns to the White House and the Republicans control both chambers. The proposal also includes $100 billion in disaster aid and $10 billion in aid for agriculture and related activities. In particular, the agreement package also postpones the public debt ceiling until January 2027, meaning that trillions of dollars will continue to be added to the current federal debt of up to $36,000 billion.
The Democratic Party criticized the proposal to suspend the public debt ceiling, which could create conditions for Mr. Trump to implement tax reduction policies, but would also cause the government to reduce revenue and increase debt pressure. Mr. Trump emphasized that the US Congress needs to cancel or extend the public debt ceiling until 2029.
The result of the vote on the morning of December 20 (Vietnam time) was 174-235, not reaching the necessary yes votes for the bill to pass. Despite Mr. Trump’s support, 38 Republican congressmen voted against, and only 2 Democratic congressmen voted in favor. Republicans currently control the House of Representatives with a ratio of 219-211.
