Spain had to break two deadlocks in the game. They did so on both goals thanks to passes from the outside of Carvajal and Olmo, who managed to break through the English defensive line and electrify two plays that ended with the ball in Pickford’s goal.
We review the two key combinations in 15 frames.
First goal: Carvajal
The play begins with several passes between the defenders, when Fabián drops down to receive the ball and builds up the play. Spain has its four attackers very high up and Carvajal open on the wing.
When Fabian’s ball travels towards Carvajal, Lamine Yamal looks for the space between the centre-back and the full-back. The second, Luke Shaw, hesitates whether to go out to cover Carvajal or cover the young Spanish winger’s run.

Suddenly the play grows. Carvajal, who has seen Lamine’s run, receives the ball and continues the play – with one touch – with the outside. The pass, as precise as it is difficult, goes past Shaw and finds Lamine.

Yamal was waiting for the pass to the wing, but he corrected himself and, in a juggling act, stuck his left leg in, reoriented himself and made contact with the ball, which was already heading towards the English goal.

Lamine dribbles the ball across the edge of the area. Around him, Morata makes a run that pushes Stones away from the penalty spot. On the other side there is only one defender, Walker, for two attackers, Olmo and Williams.

The play is about to be decided: Olmo attacks the penalty spot and makes Walker hesitate, who ends up following him. Williams now has a highway to the goal.

Lamine waits for every breakaway and ends up assisting Nico Williams, with a perfect pass that leaves the ball where Nico’s run ends, who scores.

Second goal: Olmo
Fabián starts the play again with an unopposed pass to Dani Olmo, who receives it alone. The two English midfielders cover the right side of the field where the Spanish attackers are concentrated.

Olmo accelerates towards goal and Oyarzabal waits between the lines. Meanwhile, on the touchline, Cucurrella breaks free and offers himself as an option to continue the play.

At this moment Olmo finds the gap and in a difficult execution with the outside he gets the ball to Oyarzabal between Rice and Walker.

The pass eliminates the two English midfielders and the full-back, Walker. Oyarzabal receives it and, with one touch, passes the ball to Cucurella who is now fully incorporated into the attack.

Stones is left behind in the play and Oyarzabal makes a run behind him, gaining the position from the other centre-back, Guehi.

Walker tries to make up for lost ground but is unable to block Cucurella’s precise cross, which is looking for the area between the goalkeeper and the centre-backs. Oyarzabal’s position had to be reviewed by the VAR for a possible offside.

With Stones outclassed and Guehi behind Oyarzabal, the striker only had to get his toe out to deflect the ball just enough to end up in the English goal.
