According to the Korean Ministry of Human Resources Management, the salary of the country’s civil servants will increase by 3% this year compared to last year, and the increase also applies to the salary of the President of Korea.
Although President Yoon Suk Yeol was temporarily suspended from office during his impeachment since mid-December last year, he continued to receive his salary as normal.
Therefore, Mr. Yoon will receive a salary increase of about 7.5 million won to 262.5 million won (more than 4.5 billion VND) this year. Last year, his salary was 254.9 million won. This means he will receive 21.8 million won/month (more than 376 million VND) before taxes.
During the next 6 months, Mr. Yoon will be paid a salary of about 130 million won while being impeached by the Constitutional Court despite not performing any duties as president.
Similarly, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, also suspended from office while awaiting impeachment, will continue to receive a salary of 235.5 million won in 2025.
The South Korean president’s security leadership did not comply with the arrest order
The Korean National Assembly voted to pass the impeachment decision on Mr. Yoon on December 14, 2024 because the leader declared martial law on December 3 of the same year.
Article 38 of the Korean Constitutional Court Law requires a decision to be made within 180 days from the court’s receipt of the file, but this is not a legally binding deadline.
Some opinions believe that the president and prime minister who is being impeached should not be paid salaries to avoid violating the “no work, no pay” principle. However, in reality this is not legally clear because there is currently no regulation prohibiting the payment of salaries to impeached officials.
If found guilty by the Constitutional Court, Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol will be deposed.
