The Amsterdam Court of First Instance sentenced Delano G. (24 years) and Kamil E. (38) to 28 years in prison this Wednesday for the murder of Peter R. de Vries (64), the most famous crime reporter. from the Netherlands who was shot in 2021 on a city street. Krystian M. (29) has received a 26-year sentence for organizing the crime. The Prosecutor’s Office had considered the events as “a terrorist attack”, but the judges have not seen it that way, although they admit that society was shocked.
According to the ruling, Delano G. fired the shots, and Kamil E. drove the car in which they tried to escape. Krystian M. served as “organizer and facilitator.” Three other suspects have received sentences for complicity of between 14 and 10 years, and three more have been acquitted due to lack of evidence.
In 2019, Peter R. de Vries reported threats from Ridouan Taghi, leader of the largest criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking in the Netherlands: the so-called Mocro Maffia. Taghi is serving a life sentence in a maximum security Dutch prison from February 2024. De Vries was the prosecution witness’s confidant in the Marengo case. This is the largest trial against a criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking in the Netherlands, with Taghi as the main suspect. Although he denied in a letter that he had the reporter on his list of enemies, the insufficient security he had before he died was the subject of debate. Two years after the assassination, a Security Committee report concluded that authorities “failed to recognize” signs of preparations for the shooting. “It was not possible to assess whether additional protective measures had to be adopted for De Vries,” according to these experts. The murder of the prosecution witness Marengo caseand his lawyer preceded the death of the reporter and caused stupor in Dutch society.
Peter R. De Vries was shot dead in Amsterdam on July 6, 2021, while leaving work at the commercial television network RTL. He was left lying on the street in broad daylight and died nine days later in the hospital. While he was badly injured and visible to everyone, several people recorded images that immediately circulated on social networks. The Prosecutor’s Office considered that the murder had “terrorist intent”, in part due to the speed with which the De Vries video was distributed. Seeing him like this could be a way of instilling fear in the population. The sentence does not consider it proven that the nine defendants were members of a criminal organization.
On the day of the fatal shooting, Dutch police arrested two suspects: Delano G. (24 years old) and Kamil E (38). They have been remanded in custody since then. Although the merits of the case were addressed in a hearing in June 2022, a month later the court postponed the verdict because new documents had to be added to the file.

Five other people were later arrested as part of the criminal investigation into the perpetrators of the shooting and other possible suspects. Between January and April 2023, there were two more arrests, bringing the total number of suspects to nine. If Delano G. and Kamil K. had to answer for the shooting and for having driven the car during the subsequent escape, the other seven detainees were suspected of having been involved in the murder of De Vries, possession of weapons and/or participation in an organization criminal. Everyone’s age ranges from 21 to 38 years old.
