- Announcement of Nobel Prize in Medicine for the year 2021
- David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian found
- Together they discovered such receptors that were always made of puzzle
- Receptors that recognize temperature, cold, heat and pain
The Nobel Prize in Medicine for the year 2021 has been announced. David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian have received this prestigious honor this year. Both had discovered receptors for temperature and touch. Last year, the award was given jointly to Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Rice. Together these scientists discovered the hepatitis C virus.
big mystery solved
The Nobel Committee has described how David and Ardum made this discovery for which they have been awarded. There are different effects of temperature or pressure on the nerves present in our skin. It has always been a puzzle in front of scientists that how temperature, heat or coldness or touch is detected and converted into nerve impulses and sent to the part of the nervous system where their meaning is understood by our body? This question has been answered in the new discovery.
What is search?
David used chili for his discovery to see the effect of pain on the skin. They found the cDNA gene that made the ion channel (TRPV1) that had never been discovered before. This ion channel was activated at a temperature that was considered equal to ‘pain’. David and Ardum then discovered TRPM8, a receptor associated with chills.
Why is this discovery important?
Ardum discovered PIEZO1 and PIEZO2, two mechanical sensors, and found that PIEZO2 is important for detecting touch. The discovery of both has revealed to the world the mystery behind the sense of touch and the understanding of winter and heat. It is vital to our ability to feel, recognize and interact with something. It is hoped that with the help of this discovery questions related to the ability to feel, especially diseases, will be broken.
