AFP quoted a spokesman for the Constitutional Court of Korea as initially saying that the first session of the impeachment process was held at 10 a.m. December 16 (Seoul time).
Afterwards, acting Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Moon Hyung-bae confirmed that the judges meet at 10 o’clock to plan the impeachment process of the president.
According to Yonhap, investigators plan to interrogate President Yoon Suk Yeol this week about accusations of treason and abuse of power through the act of declaring martial law on the night of December 3.
All 6 judges of the Constitutional Court attended the first session. The court has a maximum period of 6 months to decide whether to dismiss President Yoon or reinstate him.
Besides President Yoon, a series of high-ranking officials of the Korean government and military face the risk of being prosecuted for treason.
A team of investigators from the police, defense ministry and anti-corruption agency is planning to summon President Yoon on December 18.
On December 15, the prosecution said it had previously issued a summons to the leader, but he refused to comply with this request.
In a related development, Chairman of the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP) Han Dong-hoon announced his decision to resign.
“I leave the position of PPP chairman,” AFP quoted Mr. Han Dong-hoon as saying in a televised meeting, while also apologizing to all those affected by the martial law incident.
Although his call for President Yoon’s impeachment led to protests from PPP members, Mr. Han Dong-hoon said he did not regret doing so.
