The Killers extended a special invitation during his performance at the Ohana Festival last Friday with the presence of Sammy Hagar and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam on stage. This annual event, which features Vedder in Dana Point, California, saw the collaboration between Brandon Flowers and the rest of the band with these two outstanding musicians.
Eddie Vedder, recognized for being the vocalist, guitarist and soloist of Pearl Jam, took the stage with The Killers to perform a version of “The Waiting,” a 1981 hit by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Later, the band welcomed the former Van Halen vocalist to perform “Why Can’t This Be Love.”
It is important to highlight that The Killers recently released their new single “Your Side of Town”, which they performed live for the first time during this festival. The song is characterized by its marked presence of synthesizers and evokes the sound of the album “Hot Fuss”. Initially, it was intended to be part of a new album, but Brandon Flowersvocalist and leader of the band, revealed that this musical project was discarded halfway through, which has led him to face a crisis in his musical career.
In an interview for a profile in The Times, Brandon Flowers shared his feelings: “Halfway through recording the album, I realized that I couldn’t continue. “I am in a crisis,” she stated. The musician explained that “The Killers are my identity and our songs fill the seats.”
However, Flowers also mentioned that he feels more fulfilled creating music like that found on “Pressure Machine,” the The Killers’ seventh studio album released on August 13, 2021. This album is considered a conceptual work based on Brandon Flowers’ childhood in Nephi, Utah.
“In writing this record, I discovered an aspect of myself that was strong. “He was the guy I was looking for!” Flowers commented. “I’m as proud of ‘Hot Fuss’ as you would be of something you did when you were 20, but I’m not 20 anymore. So I’m thinking about the next stage of my life,” The Killers frontman reflected.
Brandon Flowers went further in the interview by firmly stating:“I don’t think you’ll see us making this kind of music again,” referring to the style most similar to “Hot Fuss.”
However, the band had to issue an apology after an incident during one of their concerts in Georgia. During the performance at Black Sea Sandin Batumi, the band invited a Russian fan on stage, which sparked controversy due to political tensions between Georgia and Russia since the 2008 invasion. The audience reacted with boos, leading to Brandon Flowers to question the division between the borders of countries and express their desire for union.
Despite his attempts to calm the situation, some attendees left the concert. Subsequently, The Killers issued a statement apologizing for the controversy. The statement acknowledged that the comment intended to unite the audience may have been misinterpreted and reaffirmed the band’s desire to return soon. It is important to note that tensions between Georgia and Russia persist due to the increasing flow of Russian citizens into Georgia, which has generated conflicts with part of the local population.
What is ‘Mr. Brightside’?
It’s been more than 15 years since the band released this song, a passionate expression of a broken heart when Flowers sees his ex-partner with another man. The first release of The Killers“Mr. Brightside“, was more of an outburst of anxiety than a pop tune, but that rawness turned out to be its greatest strength.
The song reached tenth place on the US and UK charts, and has since become a double platinum album in the US and triple platinum in Britain.
