Former Tunisian 2019 presidential candidate and president of the Qalb Tounes party, Nabil Karoui, as well as his brother, MP Ghazi Karoui were taken to El-Kedia prison in Constantine, Algeria, on Saturday. Algerian journalist Hamza Hannachi said during an intervention on the 8 p.m. newspaper on the Tunisian national channel Watania 1.
Hannachi specified that the specialized penal pole of Constantine had issued, Saturday, a warrant of arrest against Nabil Karoui and his brother Ghazi, for illegal entry into Algerian territory.
“They were taken to El-Kedia prison under high security,” he noted.
Four Algerians, including a woman, were also remanded in custody for helping the Karoui brothers to enter Algeria illegally.
Hamza Hannachi added that according to the Algerian penal code, Nabil and Ghazi Karoui face three to six months in prison.
The case of the Karoui brothers had been referred to the specialized penal center of Constantine in Algeria, after the conclusion of the preliminary investigations carried out by the Tébessa police.
The public prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Kasserine (center-west of Tunisia) had ordered on August 31 the issuance of a search notice against Nabil and Ghazi Karoui. A report was also drawn up against them for illegally crossing land borders.
The prosecutor’s decision followed the report drawn up against a narcotics trafficker from the region, who was placed in police custody last Monday for helping the Karoui cross the Tunisian borders illegally to Algerian soil and helped a person escape administrative control.
As a reminder, Algerian media reported last Sunday that the Algerian border police had arrested Nabil Karoui, as well as his brother, MP Ghazi Karoui in the Algerian region of Tébessa.
The two were in an apartment in the city center, which turned out to belong to the brother of a former member of the Algerian parliament.
