Given the prevailing chaos and the image that the Royal Spanish Football Federation has offered in recent months, the Higher Sports Council (CSD) will intervene, the most important institution in Spanish football. José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, president of the CSD, will announce this Thursday to the governing body’s board of directors the creation of a guardianship committee that will have the functions of normalization, supervision and representation of the RFEF. This last point is focused on the Euro Cup and the Olympic Games, since Uribes declared last Friday that Spain cannot allow, as a country, an investigated person or a leader with a file opened by the Sports Administrative Court (TAD) for lack of very serious, as is the case of Pedro Rocha, can serve as the highest representative of Spanish football in major sporting events. The committee will also monitor the electoral process for the 2024-2028 Olympic period.
The intervention has the approval of FIFA, with which the CSD has been holding meetings in recent weeks. In fact, the idea comes from a conversation between Uribes and the general secretary of FIFA, the Swede Mattias Grafsröm. The latter brought to light the example of Italy in 2006, when the government of the transalpine country intervened in the federation following the scandal known as calciumpoli:Some managers of the most important clubs in Serie A were in charge of influencing the appointment of referees so that their teams benefited from the matches. The reins of Italian football were taken by a prestigious lawyer, Guido Rossi, who served as president, and two vice-presidents, one an expert in sports law, Paolo Nicoletti, and a prestigious former footballer, Demetrio Albertini. CSD sources assure that the composition of the committee designated to direct Spanish football will be similar.
The creation of this committee is independent of the decision made this Thursday by the CSD board of directors, which must vote on whether to provisionally suspend Pedro Rocha and the entire RFEF management committee for exceeding their duties. The vote is the natural step after the Sports Administrative Court (TAD) has initiated a file for very serious misconduct and is studying the disqualification of the federation leadership for very serious misconduct.
