The White House said that Colombia agreed to receive citizens of the country being expelled from the US on military flights, after President Donald Trump threatened to punish the South American nation if he refused, according to Reuters on January 27.
In the official announcement, the White House said that Colombia agreed to “receive unlimited reception and immediately all of Colombia’s illegal immigrants left the United States, including those present on US military flights”. .
According to The HillWhite House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said based on the new agreement, the US will stop the exclusive embargo and tariff measures for goods from the fourth largest South American economy.
Meanwhile, the stopping of US visa at the embassy in Bogota will continue until the first flight carrying Colombians is expelled.
A few hours earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused to allow military aircraft to carry smuggled immigrants of Colombians landing at the country’s airport.
Mr. Petro agreed to receive the US immigrant but “with dignity”, as through civil flights, not by military aircraft from the US.
The statement of President Petro angered President Trump. The new owner of the White House emphasized that he will start retaliating with the issuance of a 25% tariff for Colombia products and this tax will increase to 50% in a week.
Mr. Trump also stated that he immediately recovered visas for Colombian government officials as well as “supporters” President Petro, and put Colombians on the area to be strengthened at airports.
After the White House updated the new information, the Colombian government announced briefly to overcome the deadlock in controversy about smuggled immigrants with the US, AFP reported.
“We will continue to receive the Colombians deported,” AFP quoted Foreign Minister Colombia Luis Gilberto Murillo at a press conference in Bogota.
