The number of victims of the collapse of a multi-storey residential building in the American city of Sarfside (Florida) has reached 54.
Rescuers removed the bodies of another 8 victims from the June 24 tragedy from under the rubble, Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levin Kawa told reporters.
According to her, 33 persons were identified.
At the same time, 86 people are still listed as missing.
The 14th day of search and rescue operations has ended, there is no chance of finding survivors under the rubble, the Mayor of Miami-Dade continued.
“We made an incredibly difficult decision to move from a search and rescue operation to a recovery operation,” the county mayor said.
Earlier, on June 24, in the town of Sarfside, with a population of about 5,600, part of an apartment building called Champlain, consisting of 13 floors and 270 apartments, suddenly collapsed.
The Sarfside authorities, in a 2018 correspondence with the building’s administration, indicated that the building, erected in 1981, suffered severe structural damage and would require about $ 9 million for urgent repairs.
Due to tropical cyclone Elsa approaching Florida, the remaining southern part of the building was demolished on July 4 at 22:30 local time for security reasons.
