The enormous success achieved by Vince Gilligan in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul has made many of us forget that many years before landing in Albuquerque, the screenwriter and television producer made a name for himself on the legendary The X-Files by writing many of the stories of Mulder and Scully. Now, Gilligan announces his return to science fiction with a new series.
A light science fiction series
Of course, don’t expect a story about aliens, time travel and other common themes of more “hardcore” science fiction. In a talk with Variety, the American director also claims to have a somewhat lighter idea.
“Yeah! To this I wouldn’t call it hard science fiction, it’s softer. But yeah, at its core it has a sci-fi element, and there’s no crime or meth. It will be something fun and different, and I’m not at all sure how people will react. (…) I do know that it is a story that interests me where Rhea [Seehorn] He will play a very different character than the one we saw him play in Better Call Saul. The strange thing about it is that it also happens in Albuquerque, but in a very different world where nothing can be superimposed.”
Gilligan did not want to give many details about the show, but he did say that the first episode shows a present identical to ours that will change abruptly creating drama between their characters in the following episodes. Serves you? This premise could perfectly be that of The Leftovers, another series where science fiction is present although very diluted and that you should see. The latter, I emphasize, is my note and not a statement from the screenwriter.
We will have to closely follow the project which, for the moment, is paralyzed with all the strikes that Hollywood has experienced and continues to experience. Gilligan also helped create The Lone Gunmen, a spin-off of the canceled X-Files.
