Attending were 5 guest teams, including the Australian team (world No. 51), the Mongolian team (No. 59 in the world), Kansai University (Japan), Suwon Club (Korea), Choco Mucho Club (Philippines). and 2 Vietnamese teams, including the VN 1 women’s team and the VN 2 women’s team. In which, the VN 1 team (ranked 47 in the world) with the participation of top players Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Doan Thi Lam Oanh, Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh, Nguyen Thi Trinh, Tran Tu Linh, Dinh Thi Tra Giang, Nguyen Khanh. Being evaluated as a bright candidate for the championship title, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and her teammates are not allowed to be subjective if they want to keep the championship trophy at home.
From the beginning of 2023 until now, the main faces of the Vietnamese women’s volleyball team have played continuously with a total of 19 international matches, so there are signs of overload. That’s why this team of players is resting from participating in the 2nd stage of SEA V.League (from August 11 to 13 in Thailand) to recover. The training board of the Vietnamese women’s volleyball team evaluated the VTV Cup international women’s volleyball tournament (from August 19 to 26 in Lao Cai) as an opportunity for the main Vietnamese players to regain the feeling of competition, in order to prepare for the upcoming tournament. Two important tournaments took place in a row – the Asian Championships in Thailand (from August 30 to September 9, ASIAD 19 in China (from September 23 to 8.10). It is a pity that the owner of number 1 Tran Thi Thanh Thuy only attended the Asian Championship, then returned to Japan to play for the PFU BlueCats Club, but could not stand side by side with her teammates to compete in ASIAD 19.
Competing with many different opponents at the 2023 VTV Cup international women’s volleyball tournament is an opportunity for the two Vietnamese women’s volleyball teams to train in all aspects. The format of the round-robin competition is one round, then the first and second-placed teams will enter the final to compete for the championship. Similarly, the third and fourth placed teams play the third place match; fifth-placed team, six-match fifth-place match helps teams compete in more matches, increasing the chance of friction.
In order to ensure fairness and limit controversial sensitive situations, the organizers of the VTV Cup 2023 volleyball tournament also applied the same magic eye technology as VAR in football for the first time. In particular, this year’s tournament has an attractive prize structure, the highest ever with 12,000 USD for the championship title, 7,000 USD for the second place team, 5,000 USD for the third place team. There are also a fourth prize ($2,000), a style and encouragement prize ($1,000) and nine individual prizes ($300 each). The tournament is an opportunity for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet to review and select the optimal squad to attend the Asian Championships and ASIAD.
