Taliban official says they are discussing ‘turning a new page’ in relations with the US

Taliban official Muttaki made a statement to Al Jazeera television regarding the talks between the US and Taliban officials in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Muttaki noted that they discussed “opening a new page” in relations with the United States and that they prioritized humanitarian aid.

Expressing that they demanded the removal of the obstacle placed by the USA on the reserves of the Central Bank of Afghanistan, Muttaki announced that the USA will provide the people of Afghanistan with a new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine.

Muttaki also informed that the Taliban officials will meet with the representatives of the European Union.

Suheyl Şahin, one of the spokespersons of the Taliban, told the Associated Press (AP) that he would review the Doha Agreement in meetings with senior US and Taliban officials.

Another official, who did not want his name to be given because he was not authorized to make a public statement, said that the issue of terrorism would also be discussed during the talks.

The process of US withdrawal from Afghanistan by agreement of the Taliban

Within the framework of the peace agreement reached between the USA and the Taliban in February 2020, the process of withdrawing international forces from Afghanistan started this year.

Continuing negotiations with the Afghan government in Doha, the Taliban had simultaneously dominated a large part of the country since June.

Besieging the capital Kabul, the Taliban took control of the city without conflict after President Ashraf Ghani left the country on August 15, while the process of withdrawing foreign troops from Afghanistan was completed on August 31.
