Swiss International Air Lines of Switzerland recently announced that a young flight attendant died in the hospital a week after being inhaled by smoke on the plane, according to the website Business Insider.
The incident occurred on the flight on December 23, 2024 from Bucharest (Romania) to Zurich (Switzerland). The airline said the Airbus A220’s engine had problems causing smoke to fill the passenger cabin and cockpit.
The plane had to make an emergency landing at the airport in the city of Graz, southern Austria. A flight attendant suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital by an ambulance helicopter. Despite intensive treatment, the victim died on December 30, 2024.
All 74 passengers on the plane were evacuated. All 5 flight crew members and 12 passengers received medical assistance.
The investigation is focusing on the plane’s mechanical components, including the engine, and oxygen mask equipment for the flight crew.
The airline is working with authorities and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney and aircraft manufacturer Airbus. Swiss International Air Lines announced that initial results showed a technical problem in one engine but the cause of the smoke had not been determined.
