Karur:The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced that it is withdrawing its mandate to mention expiry dates on sweets sold at retail stores.
There is a rule that details such as expiry date and date of production should be mentioned on the food products that are packed and sold. Meanwhile, the Food Safety Department received complaints that the quality of sweets sold at retail in some shops was not up to par.
Following this, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered that the expiry date details should also be given to sweets sold in retail without packaging. This order came into effect from October 1, 2020. Following this, in shops selling sweets retail across the country, the name of the sweet and the expiration date (Best Before Day) were kept.
In this situation, the Food Safety and Standards Commission of India has issued a notification on November 7 that this order is withdrawn and it will continue until further decision is taken. The notification further states that those who wish can specify the expiry date and the expiry date notification will continue for packaged food products.
Social activists and the general public have protested this announcement by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India as henceforth consumers will not be able to know the expiry date of the sweets sold at retail.
