Super Mario Party Jamboree, the latest installment in the long-running Mario Party series, represents a significant innovation in Nintendo’s digital party landscape. The title, developed for the Switch console, stands out for a variety of content and mechanics that position it as one of the best group games currently available, so much so that it can be considered the pinnacle of the series. With a huge selection of 22 playable characters, Super Mario Party Jamboree offers the widest range in the history of the series, with the addition of debuts such as Pauline and Ninji. The seven maps available include five new creations and two remakes of past classics, which evoke the nostalgic atmosphere of the first editions of the game. Each map features a unique and interactive design, where dynamic elements such as changing trajectories or special mechanics add strategic depth and variety.
The heart of the game remains unchanged: players roll dice and move on a grid, trying to accumulate stars and coins through minigames and random encounters. However, Super Mario Party Jamboree introduces new dynamics that enrich the experience. Special platforms, shortcuts and secret passages make each game a different challenge. New features such as launch pads and elevators in the maps increase gameplay variety and keep interest high even in longer sessions. Party Square is the starting point from which players can access different game modes. From here you can explore standard options, such as the classic Mario Party, or try your hand at more competitive and fun modes. An interesting addition is the ability to customize the environment with unlockable cosmetic items, although fortunately there are no in-game purchases.
One of the most successful aspects of Super Mario Party Jamboree is the quantity and quality of the minigames, which are more than 110: the variety is impressive, offering challenges that range from simple tests of reflexes to complex tests of strategic ability. The minigames are accessible to all types of players, from veterans to casuals, with an excellent balance between ease of learning and tactical depth. The design is so well done that it manages to capture even those less accustomed to video games, making each session fun and engaging. Super Mario Party Jamboree also includes some extra modes that further enrich the gameplay. Anti-Bowser Squad, for example, allows players to join forces against a giant Bowser, while Bowserathlon offers Fall Guys-style online challenges, where up to 19 players can compete in a series of casual minigames.
Despite the positive aspects, Super Mario Party Jamboree is not without its flaws. One of the main problems concerns the management of the movements of the characters guided by the computer: it is not possible to jump or accelerate their moves, a factor that can slow down the pace of the game, especially in sessions with few human players. Furthermore, the feature of Jamboree Partners, characters who offer small bonuses during the game, is not particularly innovative and could have been implemented more significantly. Even the soundtrack, although well done, fails to leave its mark. The tracks are functional and pleasant, but they lack those memorable motifs that usually accompany Nintendo titles.
Super Mario Party Jamboree is a great addition to the series, offering hours of social fun thanks to a wide range of minigames and engaging modes. The introduction of Jamboree Partners adds a touch of freshness to the game dynamics, increasing the variety of games and encouraging cooperation and competition. While staying true to the classic mechanics that fans love, the game still manages to innovate just enough to keep your attention. Perfect for those looking for a carefree evening, Jamboree confirms itself as a fun and well-made title, capable of giving moments of joy to both veterans and new players.
