Xuan Son and the Vietnamese players were upset
On the evening of January 5, the Vietnamese team defeated Thailand in the second leg of the final and won the AFF Cup 2024 championship. In this confrontation, a situation caused intense controversy. In the 64th minute of the match, Supachok received the ball from Ben Davis and scored from long range, increasing the score to 2-1 for the Thai team. In terms of rules, this is a legal goal. But based on the perspective of fair play and martial spirit, this is a wrong action. Because before that, goalkeeper Dinh Trieu threw the ball out so the medical team could take care of a player. Most professional players will return the ball, but Thai players choose to continue playing as if nothing happened.
This lack of fair play caused the Thai team in general and Suapchok in particular to receive a lot of criticism. On social networking sites, striker Nguyen Xuan Son of the Vietnamese team used the word “idiot” (roughly translated: stupid person) to talk about Supachok. After the match, a series of Vietnamese team players such as Bui Tien Dung, Nguyen Thanh Chung, Nguyen Quang Hai… or coach Kim Sang-sik all said that it was bad behavior.
Supachok suffered “wrath” from public opinion
On the youtube page of the AFF Cup organizers, many fans in the Southeast Asia region left many critical comments under the video of Supachok’s goal. Account koragonbuilds5749 wrote: “In 25 years of watching football, I have never seen such unsportsmanlike behavior.”
Account Chellri16 shared: “Thailand played dirty but still lost. Humiliating. What’s wrong with the King of Southeast Asia? Congratulations Vietnam, you won when you played with all your heart, always worked hard and had Great team spirit. Sending you lots of love from the Philippines.”
Account wyattcsilly6639 sarcastically: “This Japanese coach does not convey the samurai spirit, he teaches his team not to respect the spirit of fair play. He even celebrates “proudly” the goal. Retribution is It’s real, right?”.
Account joshiahlo4150 criticized even more heavily: “The second goal of the Thai team is really immoral. Remember, football is a sport, and sports must be healthy, civilized and clean. I extremely surprised by the passionate celebration of the Thai team, the coaching staff and Thai fans. It was truly so dirty and unsportsmanlike beyond imagination.”
There have been nearly 1,000 comments on Supachok’s goal video alone on YouTube. If other platforms are included, this number is much larger.
